Belt pulley system

How do I know if my vehicles belts are worn?

Your car or truck may have one or more belts to help it run properly. In time and along with improper tension on the belts or worn tensioner/pulleys your belts can become worn and fail. This is why it is important to have your belts inspected every time you have your vehicle maintained.

If your belts are showing any of these signs, chances are you may need new belts:

  • Dried out and cracked
  • Worn
  • Frayed
  • Seems loose or stretched out
  • Squeals or squeaks when vehicle is running

Check your vehicle’s manufacturer recommendation on how often your vehicle’s belts should be replaced.

  • Serpentine belt replacement

Your serpentine belt transfers power from the crankshaft to all of the engine accessories. Some cars may have a series of V-belts or fan belts, which provide the same functions as the serpentine belt. If a vehicle’s serpentine belt fails engine damage can occur, and the loss of the starting and charging system as well as the power steering.

  • Timing belt replacement

The timing belt is key to overall engine performance and helps drive the water and oil pumps as well as other key parts of the engine. It also controls when valves in the engine open and close.

Unfortunately, timing belts aren’t visible to inspect since they are hidden within the engine, behind a cover. If your timing belt breaks, your engine will shut off and won’t restart. Some internal components may also get damaged from the belt breaking, which could lead to a costly repair.

In more recent years, some vehicle manufacturers have replaced these belts with timing chains, which don’t require replacement as often as the belt. Stop by your Sears Auto Center so we can provide a maintenance schedule for your vehicle and also advise when your timing belt or chain should be replaced according to manufacturer’s recommendations.
